In a bid to strengthen disaster preparedness and response in hospitals, the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management, in partnership with the Rwanda National Police, conducted training of trainers (ToT) composed by representatives of CHUB Hospital staff from August 22 to 25, 2023.

The training initiative aimed at enhancing disaster risk prevention and mitigation measures and building related capacities among CHUB staff.

The four-day workshop aimed to equip CHUB staff with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters of all types, including natural and man-made emergencies. It focused on the critical role that hospitals play during disasters.

ACP Egide MUGWIZA, Director General of Response and Recovery Operations, emphasized that such training is paramount, stating, "In the face of unexpected natural and manmade disasters, preparedness and quick response can save a number of lives. This training is an important investment in our community's safety and well-being." 

The Acting Director General of the Hospital, Dr. Ngarambe Christian, emphasized that training is of great importance. He added, "This training equips our staff with the expertise to handle a diverse range of emergency situations, ensuring that we can continue to provide the highest level of care, even in the most challenging circumstances of disaster, and ensuring service continuity."

The participants expressed their gratitude for this capacity building and praised the relevance of the content covered as it provided them with a deeper understanding of disaster management, specifically hands-on skills that are most valuable during high-stress situations like fire outbreaks and other emergencies.

In addition to the theoretical aspects through presentations, the program featured simulations on fire safety tips and practical exercises, allowing attendees to apply their newly acquired knowledge in real-life scenarios.

The covered topics included disaster risk assessment, where participants learned how to identify and assess potential hazards and vulnerabilities to develop effective disaster preparedness plans; emergency response planning; triage and medical care during disasters; and evacuation procedures, including the safe transportation of patients.
